I write to ask that you discuss President Bush's proposed troop increase as escalation, which is the accurate label, rather than as a 'surge,' which connotes a very short-lived action -- not what is being proposed.
The media has a profound responsibility in these matters. How an issue is framed has a big impact on the way viewers understand it. Therefore, framing it as accurately as possible -- and in as plain language as possible -- is of great importance.
In fact, it would be most informative both to explain that President Bush is proposing escalation AND that he is labeling this escalation -- which would likely last for well over a year -- a 'surge.'
Thank you for your consideration.
