It’s so simple, one has to wonder why the mainstream media can’t or won’t talk about it. One has to assume it is because they are so embedded with conventional wisdom and faith based politicos, that they couldn’t see reality if it were plastered to the end of their noses.
I could almost hear the group think sigh of relief throughout the beltway when President Ford died, it gave them a reason to collectively remind all of us how “good” it was for our nation to allow the power of the presidency to run amok, to disregard the rule of law, to use the power of the bully pulpit to be a real bully, and then pardon “for the good of the country” without holding any individual liable for their criminal behavior.
Good for our country? NO, in fact we must not allow this to happen again. We can never make amends with the community of nations, or be trusted in the world unless we show our determination to live by the rule of law we claim to cherish so. That requires us to make a strong statement and at this point in time that statement is impeachment. Not only of George Walker Bush, but Richard Bruce Cheney as well, and until we do something this “extreme” we can assume the world will not take us seriously in any endeavor we undertake.
The way I arrived at this was I had an acquaintance whom by all accounts is liberal, She started telling me how President Ford “was misunderstood and he had SAVED the country by pardoning Nixon and he was truly patriotic….” I had heard the same thing from the talking heads and dismissed it but coming from her I realized how intrinsically untrue it was, and perhaps we would not be in the mess we are in if only Mr. Nixon and his minions had paid more than a political price for their crimes.
We should waste no more time in pursuing this avenue, I believe this administration knows it is a possibility and are lining up their ducks to fight and undermine it. (See the great diaries re: forced resignations of U.S Attorneys General) We must take a proactive stance and fight the continued malfeasance of this president and his administration. We must remind our House Members and Senators, both Democrat and Republican that we did send them with a message and that is had nothing to do with business as usual. And we must do this ceaselessly until we see the result we want.
Take just a moment to communicate with your representatives. An email works, a phone call is better and quite honestly snail mail has impact simply because it is far less common in this day and age. Here are some simple links to help you make this happen. Ask friends and family to do the same, and give them the phone number or address so that they are more likely to follow through.
