In response to a widely-circulated "support the troops" posting on many blogs, which posting was "pro-troops" by being hatefully anti-civilian (and otherwise bigoted, sexist, etc.), I began replying to these postings with a link to my article, "Don't Support The Troops", which I wrote a few weeks after news concerning Abu Ghraib came to light.
Since many of these blog postings appeared on Myspace.com, I began receiving quite a bit of mail from the people on Myspace I had replied to, and eventually began a blog there to converse (very CON) with them. Many responses from alleged military and their families were pretty angry, to say the least. I was told frequently I should be dead, or that the person sending the message to me would be happy to make me that way. When I pointed out that this hardly seemed the rational response of one allegedly risking his life to defend my freedom, I was often told to get out of the sender's country (meaning the US, which apparently the sender personally owned).
Ultimately, the dialogs occurring about the war and the real meaning of "supporting" or "not supporting" the troops inspired me to begin the above linked "Don't Support The Troops" website.
Here is a link to one of the "support the troops" postings, this one on Usenet. Note that it is an interchangeable bit of propaganda, as it is here exhorting people to support the Sri Lankan military! I have also seen a version for the Canadian military. It seems everyone the world over loves to extol the virtues of their troops, while ranting contra the civilian scum they are alleged to be protecting.
