Yesterday, I shared data on how traffic to '08 campaign websites was already as high as in the headiest days of the '04 Dean campaign. I concluded that netroots intensity had already reached the frenzied peaks of the Sleepless Summer Tour and the Iowa Perfect Storm, but I was wrong. In this election, the netroots are growing everywhere, not just on campaign websites and blogs. And I have one remarkable example.
I'm still playing wait and see with all the candidates. Clearly, not everyone is. On Facebook, an apparently spontaneous and unofficial group for Obama has garnered 100 members in less than an hour, 1000 in a bit over a day, 10,000 in two days, 100,000 in nine days, and is up to 125,000 on day 10. It has surpassed all its member goals on its way to 1,000,000 by February 15. Apparently by March, the Obama group will have more Facebook members than Facebook, eventually eclipsing total US population. This could come in handy for Obama's eventual world domination, but for now, the group is using its powers toward peaceful ends, such as making Obama videos #1 on YouTube. Imagine, however, what netroots growing this fast will be able to do once the primaries are upon us. It's so exciting, I want to be out knocking on doors in Iowa.
I found my Perfect Storm ski cap just the other day.
