Today's tour of the Gulf Coast follows- but first, a selection from Emmylou Harris:
How would you feel if the world was falling apart around you
Pieces of the sky were falling in your neighbors yard
But not on you
Wouldn't you feel just a little bit funny
Think maybe there's something you oughta do
More after the flip...
You're doing a heck of a job, BROWN.
A big ol' shout out to the folks at UPS, who've chosen to celebrate the
company's centennial at its New Orleans hub.
That's 650 jobs, baby!

New Orleans Needs Teachers
Here Comes the Judge
Another shout out for US District Court Judge L.T. Senter Jr.
Less than two weeks ago, after he ruled that "It is without dispute that Hurricane Katrina was a windstorm," and that it was up to insurers to prove that damage was caused otherwise, a Mississippi jury awarded $2.5 million in punative damages against State Farm.
Now, he has just rejected the proposed settlement in the big Mississippi class action case, telling State Farm to provide more details of how homeowners' claims would be reviewed and paid... can't be too careful.
Follow the Money
The piecemeal approach to rebuilding and the lack of a strong Federal recovery plan has led to a trickle-down public and private relief effort that has both locals and the Nation of Islam asking, "Where's all the money?" See...
here and here.
Gimme Shelter
Despite a lack of livable low-income housing, concerns over crime
have led the New Orleans Housing Authority and HUD to announce plans to demolish several vacant projects that were undamaged during the storm. Sister Helen "Dead Man Walking" Prejean
doesn't think so.
