At this point in the Presidency of George W. Bush, I feel it prudent for us to remember and account for the depth of carnage his administration has done to the integrity of the United States government as it pertains to the individual citizen. Despite his low poll numbers and the clear consensus that his presidency is, in fact over, we must not neglect our duty to seek a vast array of reversals for his administrative treachery to date. If we do, we will allow the continuation of rogue administrations into the next Presidency, whichever party prevails.
One of my biggest fears is that people are so focused on this President as an individual that their thoughts are confined to the limit of his term. While the last day of his Presidency is in my opinion, a monumental reason for celebration, we must not let his horrid policies and tactics remain viable for the next President to pursue.
Practically every single thing this President has done, signed, appointed, proposed, etc. serves his quest to turn the administrative duties of the President into pure politics and further into the service of his delusion of ‘total control.’ It is to us and to our choices in our future government to reverse these policies for the good of our nation if not to avoid our nations slow peril.
In one sense, I feel that this President is at this point intensely more concerned about his life and prosperity after his Presidency than the sacred institutions that hold our nation together. He is more willing to extort our rights and expectations to repay or pay forward his delusion of life after he has left office. Couple that with the toxic blend of paranoia, incompetence, and deep narcissism and we have a major problem that envelops more and more of us each day.
For whatever reason, the fact is that the President of the United States is gutting the sovereignty and the integrity of our nation. He is imposing kingly directives on us while perpetuating the far-reaching lawlessness of those who he feels have or will serve him.
Frankly, his countless actions against [my] nation make it difficult to focus on single items. I am confident that he and his use this to their advantage. For example, this President is so despised by his citizens that (IMHO) he will likely draft new and even more severe directives against us thinking ‘what the hell? They can’t hate me any more than they already do.’
Yesterday, I saw a few polls that were crucially important. One from Newsweek said that 58% of Americans “wish the Bush presidency was simply over.” More importantly, another Newsweek Poll clearly shows America’s desire for congress to put an end to the President’s sense of omnipotence:
From MSNBC.com (Newsweek:)
“Public fatigue over the war in the Iraq is not reflected solely in the president’s numbers, however. Congress is criticized by nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of Americans for not being assertive enough in challenging the Bush administration’s conduct of the war. Even a third (31 percent) of rank-and-file Republicans say the previous Congress, controlled by their party, didn’t do enough to challenge the administration on the war.”
It is clear that Americans are begging Congress to break the threshold of ‘political civility’ and stop this travesty of an administration. Sadly, I fear that folks suffer a degree of the delusion that reelection is more important than duty. At this point, I offer this: Your fear will surely sink us all. This pinnacle point calls for sacrifice and risk rather than caution and to tread lightly toward your foe is to lose the battle.
Last week, Senator Jim Webb sat intently before us and boldly taunted the President. He lectured the President as if he were a reckless and sloppy child. Jim Webb was right and in reference to both credibility and legitimacy, the President was proven to be beneath him- beneath all of us. The rumored speech that he had torn up suggests an irrelevant caution that many Dems seem to be holding to. Senator Webb’s heroic frankness should be a beacon to our beloved opposition to abandon their cautious ways and race toward the skirmish. Yet, still I see caution.
We must not comfort ourselves with the President’s low poll numbers. Historically, it’s clear that the more isolated the leader, the more imperiled his nation becomes. Thankfully, our system of government allows for its branches to check each other, especially if the other has become a rogue and dangerous entity. The problem is, in order for government to cleanse itself of infection, it must act.Once that action is taken, we must go back and restore as much of the President's damage as we can find. The alternative to this would surely lead to further abuses by further Presidents until America is unrecognizable.
Like many (64% and growing), I am begging my Congress to end cautiousness and act to reverse the damage this horrid Administration has done. There are no excuses left. Soon, I fear, there will be no return from the darkness this President is leading his citizens into to serve himself.
It has to start now. America is clearly waiting for you. So, please, let's get it going.
Update:
I spelled "Wayward" wrong in my title. So much for me and so forth!
