We don't link to People Magazine much around here, but today I came across something really awesome that I think DKOS users will want to see.
Tyra Banks has recently been slammed by the popular culture media for pictures taken of her in a swimsuit in Australia. She recently retired from modeling and has gained 30 pounds and now weighs 161 pounds at 5'10". She has been called "Tyra Porkchop" and mocked her with headlines like "America's Next Top Waddle."
Tyra's been firing back on her TV show and in People Magazine at these critics, concerned about what it's doing to other young women who look up to her or who are struggling with body image.
From MSNBC
"I get so much mail from young girls who say, ‘I look up to you, you’re not as skinny as everyone else, I think you’re beautiful,’ " she said. "So when they say that my body is ‘ugly’ and ‘disgusting’, what does that make those girls feel like?"
And here's a video of her in the swimsuit in question, on her show, letting it rip on her critics (the video cuts off at the end, but her final words are below):
Luckily, I'm strong enough and I have a good enough support system," Banks, 33, says. "I love my Mama, and she has helped me to be a strong woman so I can overcome these kinds of attacks, but if I had a lower self-esteem, I would probably be starving myself right now. That's exactly what is happening to other women all over this country."
Growing increasingly emotional, she addresses those who "have something nasty to say about women who are built like me ... women who have been picked on, women whose husbands put them down, women at work or girls at school – I have one thing to say to you: Kiss my fat a--." (
It's astonishing to see the body images that the cultural media promotes and how younger and younger girls are influenced by it. Let's hope that more and more media figures stand up to this BS...
