Please, I beg you. If you don't want to keep perpetuating GW's and the right-wing's propaganda, stop using the phrase harm's way immediately. I'll explain why and give you examples of what to use instead, on the other side...
I can't definitively say when the phrase harm's way started to be commonly used in reference to soldiers and war, but I'd bet it was around the time the Admin started trotting out their reasons to invade Iraq. Harm's way suits their purposes just fine, because it's a mushy, imprecise phrase that soft-pedals the reality of what our forces are actually facing over there:
DANGER!
Head-and-limb-exploding, bullet-ridden, bloody, mangled, f#*@ing DANGER!
Harm's way is something you get into when the iron tips over. Harm's way is what you face when the toddler on the tricycle barrels at you at full speed.
Harm does not lead to death or serious injury -- well, not exclusively, and that's the problem. Because harm is a soft, generic term, when applied to our soldiers it mutes the immediacy of the DANGER they are in every minute of every day. Harm is danger's soft, pathetic cousin blubbering in the corner.
So, please remember, that's:
D-A-N-G-E-R,
Every time someone uses the phrase harm's way they do a disservice to our forces and minimizes their sacrifices.
