Under Portugal's existing law abortion is only allowed in the case of rape or when there is a risk the child will be born with a deformaty or incurable disease. Illegal abortion is punishible with up to 3 years in prison.
But today the Portugese voted for change in a national referendum:
Prime Minister Jose Socrates has said abortion will be legalised in Portugal despite the turnout for a referendum being too low to be legally binding.
Turnout was about 40%, far less that the 50% required, but of those who did vote, 59.3% backed a proposed change to the current law.

I was in Portugal a few days ago on a week break after finishing my finals in Spain and while I was there I took some pictures of some of the campaign posters from both sides(Photos below) and saw some of the campaigning. Unfortunetly I don't speak Portugese so I couldn't really talk to people about it, but I did see far more people and posters on the pro-legalization side of the issue in all but the most rural areas of Portugal.
