tpm has the video highlights of her speech to the senate today.
please watch it. if you can't deconstruct it in real time, you need remedial deconstructing lessons.
since it is a piece of pure posturing, clintonco will judge it by the nature of its reception in various circles, including ours. that's why we, at least, should come down hard on it.
the most substantive thing she said is that existing legislation doesn't give bush the authority to attack iran. she fails to mention that bushco keeps saying that what congress "authorizes" or doesn't has nothing to do with their constitutional authority to do as they see fit. period. isn't that really the point right now? since she's raising the question on the floor, isn't she totally required to deal with that question?
what else is there to say for "serious" people, especially the 535 in congress, than that attacking iran without congressional approval will result in immediate commencement of impeachment proceedings in the house, both in spite of and because that aproval will be extremely hard to obtain, given the level of credibility bushco has earned.
above all, the senator can not be allowed to pretend to take a strong stand on attacking iran. serious people don't pretend.
