Let's time travel: back to the late 1960's of Timothy Leary and the Magical Mystery Tour, back to the
I actually remember a lot of this music, though I was just a kid. I started listening to top-40 radio at a very young age, no doubt the influence of older siblings. The psychedelic stuff was over my head, but I still thought it was pretty cool.
When I was old enough to grasp what the late 60's had meant to our country, I began to understand the lure of psychedelic music. Cultural and social change had occurred rapidly in so many areas. People connected with each other in new ways, experienced greater individual freedoms and sought deeper meaning in life.
With a kind of nostalgia, I sometimes look back and imagine myself as a teenager during that time. What if I had been able to really experience the anti-war movement, the dreams of RFK and MLK, the belief in a utopian future? I was raised in a very conservative, evangelical family, but I know that had I been old enough at the time, I would have been a flower child.
Here are a few classic psychedelic 60's tunes I dug up:
Purple Haze--Jimi Hendrix
White Rabbit--Jefferson Airplane
People are Strange--The Doors
Light My Fire--The Doors
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida--Iron Butterfly
A Whiter Shade of Pale--Procol Harum
I'm Free--The Who
Incense and Peppermint--Strawberry Alarm Clock
Magic Carpet Ride--Steppenwolf
Sunshine Superman--Donovan
Strawberry Fields Forever--Beatles
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds--Beatles
I Love to Change the World--Ten Years After
She's a Rainbow--Rolling Stones
Eight Miles High--The Byrds
When I Was Young--Eric Burdon and the Animals
Question--The Moody Blues
