(Please forgive me for not responding right away - I have to be out this afternoon, but I wanted to do this before I changed my mind again.)
My husband was a NYC Firefighter who cleaned up at the WTC. In October 2001, after about 16 hours down there, he got sick. The fire department jerked him around for another 1 and 1/2 years before they let him out on disability.
After listening to him cough uncontrollably for 10 minutes this morning (who knows what gets his cough started? It could be the weather, a drop in humidity, the fireplace of the neighbor, some dust, he is very sensitive to many things now) I decided that I had enough. I remember clear as day Christine Todd Whitman down at the WTC site, saying the air was fine, just fine, and I need to find that video. I have tried to locate it, but can't. So if any of you are inclined to help me, I would need two things:
- The video from September 2001, when she said the air was fine, and any reports that state that she was pressured to do this, and:
- Some suggestions on ways to get my senators, Clinton and Schumer, to pay attention to this. I have already contacted Clinton twice, and have not heard a peep back from her. I am going to contact Schumer, but want to do so effectively. I have the Wiki on Whitman, but I would like to send more to my senators:
Whitman appeared twice in New York City after the September 11 attacks to inform New Yorkers that the toxins released by the attacks posed no threat to their health.[1] On September 18 the EPA released a report in which Whitman said, "Given the scope of the tragedy from last week, I am glad to reassure the people of New York and Washington, D.C. that their air is safe to breathe and their water is safe to drink."[2] Later, a 2003 report by the EPA's inspector general determined that such assurances were misleading, since when the statements were made the EPA "did not have sufficient data and analyses" to justify them.[

Thousands of the rescue workers are sick; I have not heard of many of them speaking out. The government gave many of them a buyout, with the promise to not sue, from that same Victim's Compensation Fund that gave money to the families of the deceased, so I think many of them are afraid to speak out. What I want is answers. I want to know who knew what, and why these rescue workers were misled. If any of you could help me start to get some answers, I would be forever grateful.
