I need your help, kossacks. I don't know what to do.
This site may have cost me a job opportunity. I really had no idea that the site was so offensive. The recruiter told me flat-out that this site would hinder my ability to make a living. It would seem that if you want to work in this country, you're not allowed to express your own opinions under your own name publicly, at least not if those opinions are the least bit edgy. When did we stop being the land of the free and the home of the brave? Exactly when did we become the USSA? Seriously, that's the kind of stuff that happened to people in the USSR -- great artists worked as garbagemen because they were blacklisted out of any other job. Not that I'm a great artist -- not even halfway decent -- but it's the same principle.
I feel discriminated against, frankly. I know damn well that I was the best person for that job. Damn. Well.
So this puts me in a tough spot. Do I take the site down (or undergo the arduous effort of moving it elsewhere, removing every instance of my name) and put up a boring-ass corporate-looking site on the domain with my name all over it? Or do I stand my ground on principle and live as a garbageman? Why should I have to make that choice? It just seems wrong.
The other thing that stinks about this whole situation is that I have put a lot of work into the site, into all the songs, the essays, the little functional doodads, the promotion. Lately, it's just starting to pay off in traffic -- more than twice as many unique human visitors as last month, more than twice as many pages served, more than triple the bandwidth downloaded. If the site moves to another domain, I have to start over from square one in terms of carving out a space on the web that's actually seen by more than a few people.
Gain the world and lose your soul. Sigh. I feel like sh!+.
