First, my disclaimer: I was a big fan of Senator Lieberman's after he was nominated for VP by Al Gore; I supported him verbally in the 2004 Democratic Primary; I even wrote an article promoting him before the 2006 primary. All that being said, his support for the Iraq debacle is blind, and I simply can't understand why a guy as intelligent as he is could continue to support a cause so idiotic as Bush's War. That being said, even a blind squirrel can find a nut to chew on, and it appears that Lieberman has found an acorn belonging to President Bush.
Lieberman criticizes Bush over first-responder funding WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Connecticut, most known for his avid support of President Bush's policy in Iraq, sharply criticized the Bush administration's proposals to cut funds for first-responders Wednesday, likening it to cutting funding for troops in a war.
"For four years running now, this administration has proposed cuts for first responders," Lieberman said. "For three years, even though Congress has restored some of those proposed cuts, first responder funding has decreased."
"This is effectively like under funding or cutting support for front line troops for a war," he added...
The ticker article also has another article linked to it, on Harry Reid, Lieberman and other Democrats' attempts to implement the 9/11 Commission's recommendations. (9/11 Commission Article)
As usual, the Bushbots of the Senate GOP are balking at actual reform measures, so the bill Lieberman and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) have offered to improve funding for first responders will not be easy to pass, if at all.
Mind you, Joe Lieberman still has a lot of 'splaining to do on the Iraq situation. But it appears that as Homeland Security Chairman he is attempting to draw attention to one of the many failings of the Bush Administration - namely, their hypocrisy on making our country safer.
