Boy, for a company that owes so much to the creative efforts of gay men (think Elton John and Howard Ashman) and lesbians this is a bit of a slap in the face. Turns out Disneyland does weddings (who knew?), specifically something called Fairy Tale Weddings & Honeymoons, a "fantasy" wedding service offered by Disney. But it turns out they're only available to heterosexual couples.
This article details how Disney is trying to use Florida and California's discrimination to explain away their own in dealing with same-sex couples. Disney says that in order for anyone to have a wedding celebration at their resorts, they must have a valid marriage license. However, what Disney sells aren't marriage licenses, but wedding services and nothing in state law prevents them from providing those to gay couples. Doing that is entirely Disney's choice.
It also turns out that in California gay and lesbian couples can celebrate their domestic partnerships at Disney, but a different department handles civil union celebrations than the "wedding teams" that do weddings. And get this, straight couples can exchange vows in the Rose Court Garden while gay couples are forbidden from using it. They might as well put up a "No Gays Allowed" sign and be done with it.
This is the best quote in the article:
Said Samiya Bashir of Freedom to Marry, a pro-gay advocacy group working for same-sex marriage nationwide: "There are countless companies all over Florida that offer their services to same-sex couples. So for any private company to lean on their state's legal discrimination to offer their own is fruitless."
