After a slow start, there is curently some real coverage of the scandal regarding the firing of the US Attorneys. However, one crucial point has not been made anywhere that I can see: that the US Attorneys in question are Republicans who obtained their original appointment from President Bush.
My understanding is that US Attorney appointments are political. I know in West Virginia where I live, the US Attorneys are replaced every time there is a change of party in the White House. Even though all but 1 of West Virginia federal office holders are Democrats, Bush appointed Republicans to hold the 2 US Attorney positions in the State. Note that while the original appointment is political, obviously the appointees are expected to handle the prosecutorial functions of their position in a non-partisan manner.
Can anyone confirm or oppose my understanding that the US Attorney position is originally a political appointment, thus all current US Attorneys are Bush political appointees? I ask this question because apparently Fox News (sic) is implying that the fired individuals are all Democrats and that the reason why they are not pursuing so-called "voter fraud" cases or are being extra zealous in prosecuting Republicans. However, my belief is that these are Republicans who are simply carrying out their office in a non-partisan way. In this White House, that is a dischargeable offense.
Anyone know the political affiliation of the fired US Attorneys and who appointed them?
