...it's time to draft Kate Wilder (pictured at podium), the first female Green Beret and a woman who stood strong with Jim Webb when he was scurilously attacked by the George "Macaca" Allen campaign as somehow "anti-woman."

Now, it's time to Draft Kate Wilder to run for the Virginia House of Delegates - elections this November - against a nasty, right-wing Republican in a district that is solid blue (voted for John Kerry, Tim Kaine, Jim Webb, etc.). For more on said nasty Republican, see here.  For more on Kate, see below the fold.  Thanks, and please sign our petition!

The response to our article about Fairfax County Republican Delegate Dave Albo, how vulnerable and out of touch he is with his district, has received a strong response. The netroots has spoken loud and clear: they want Kate Wilder to step up and take Dave Albo down!

Kate Wilder stepped up to the plate in the Webb Campaign. She was a solid volunteer from before the primary through the general election who worked in the office nearly every day. She worked to build Jim's presence outreach among veterans. She travelled around the Commonwealth to talk about Jim's committment to Virginians values and she got front and center to help rebut George Allen scurilous attacks against Jim Webb's record on women's issues.

Kate has lived in the 42nd District since 1988. Like Jim, she served our country and retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel and settled down in Northern Virginia. While in the Army, she broke down barriers, <font color=green>overcame abuse and harrassment to become the first woman Green Beret in Army history</font>. President Kennedy once said "the green beret is a symbol of excellence, a badge of courage, and a mark of distiction in the fight for freedom."

We want to call Kate Wilder to duty to show the courage to lead the people again. We've seen what beating one incumbent can do in the United States Senate. We want to see Kate bring her skills to be ar on Dave Albo and the government-hating obstructionists that hold power in the House of Delegates. Because Dave Albo must go, it's time to Draft Kate Wilder to serve.

Please sign our petition urging Kate Wilder to serve her country once again! Thanks.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

and she needs to be persuaded.  I repeat here the substance of a comment I made on a related diary at Raisingkaine a few days ago, a comment I entiteld "Oh how much I need to say":

    1. there seems a hesitation on her part to run in an offyear election because the Dems turnout tends to be lower.  But we should note that such did not prevent Jim Webb from winning a US Senate race, nor Dems across the Country doing very well -  such as the House and the Senate and several legislative bodies at state levels
    1. Given the lack of top of ballot statewide races, it is far easier to focus attention on individual GA races
    1. Jim Webb is committed to helping the party statewide.  In this cycle he can focus on GA races, whereas in 2 years the focus will inevitably be towards statewide races.  Think of the benefit of a fundraiser done by Jim.
    1.  Because of the lack of other races (3 other states have legislative, two of them governors) it becomes possible to turn to the national netroots (eg:  dailykos) as a source of support, financial and manpower.
    1. Virginia Republican party is reeling right now.  The moderates (Chichester and Potts) are disappearing - it is a real opportunity to reach out to independents and moderate Republicans about the chance of making a real difference in this state.

I cannot think of a better time to take on Albo.

thus it becomes possible for a republican to get elected in the low turnout non-gubernatorial offyear election (such as 2003) and then be able to hold the seat even if the district is carried by the Dem candidate in the gubernatorial (2001 and 2005) or general (2002, 2004, 2006) cycle.

In Albo's case, he was first elected in 1993, when the district was not as blue as it is now.  In that year George Allen was elected governor, not a Democrat.  As an incumbent he has certain advantages, especially in name recognition and fundraising.   The district has tilted increasingly blue, as is true of most of N Virginia.  Albo is an example of someone quite out of step with the changing demographics of his district.  That is another reason we are urging Kate to challenge him.

Seems long over due to loose this guy. Kate Wilder for House of Delegates!

The Green Berets is perhaps our most impressive special forces. That’s why Kennedy had planned to use them, in stead of conventional warfare in Vietnam. Then Dallas happened.

That's quite an accomplishment, and she had to put up with a lot of abuse and vilification because of it.  To me, that demonstrates great courage.  I'd love to see what former Green Beret Kate Wilder could do (politically) to Dave "Booze Industry/I Love Rich People" Albo.

It was a situation where Special Forces didn't want to give her a chance, but the rules at the time were gender neutral (or at least, they didn't explicitly block her), so they had to give Wilder a chance and she made the cut.

After she made it through, they tightened the rules to make it more difficult (if not impossible) for any woman to get a green beret.

saw this at RaiseKaine.  Good luck.

  •  Kate Wilder has my support (0+ / 0-)

I hope she decides to accept this challenge and run against Albo.  She's courageous, intelligent, and capable of enormous drive and focus - that much is evident from her having broken into the bastion of the Green Berets.

This is someone who can speak the language of the military - a substantial part of Northern Virginia's population - and can understand the impact of things like the BRAC closings and other redistributions of military bases and facilities in Virginia.  She should appeal to the more moderate Republicans who have been watching Albo's drift rightward.

I love the brand extension! Speaking from the Richmond POV, let's hope she runs.
