What's the headline on AP's story this morning about the prosecutor scandal?
GOP wants answers on prosecutor firings
That's right! You never knew the GOP was so enthusiastic about oversight. You never realized that they wanted answers, answers, answers from Abu Gonzales and friends. But today, AP writer Hope Yen puts it all in perspective in this fine article:
http://news.yahoo.com/...
Who's the first Senator mentioned, never mind that a month ago he'd have been happy as a clam to sweep this all under the rug?
Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee say the Bush administration needs to be more straightforward about the White House's role in the dismissals of eight federal prosecutors.
"I've told the attorney general that I think this has been mishandled, that by giving inaccurate information ... at the outset, it's caused a real firestorm, and he better get the facts out fast," said Sen. John Cornyn (news, bio, voting record), R-Texas.
And in which paragraph is the DEMOCRATIC committee chair who is pursuing this first mentioned? Not until paragraph 3:
Sen. Patrick Leahy (news, bio, voting record), D-Vt., the chairman of the committee, pledged to get the public testimony of White House officials involved in the case whether they want to testify or not.
Leahy's strong statement about subpoenas and wanting the truth has to wait until paragraph six to give the writer room to talk about how much the Republicans are doing to pursue accountability on this issue which they unfortunately already own from top to bottom.
Sen. Patrick Leahy (news, bio, voting record), D-Vt., the chairman of the committee, pledged to get the public testimony of White House officials involved in the case whether they want to testify or not.
"I want testimony under oath. I am sick and tired of getting half-truths on this," Leahy said.
Arlen Specter gets a mention by name further down the page, as does John Sununu, but from the tone of this article you'd think there were no Democrats in Congress. Leahy probably wouldn't be mentioned by name if there were any way to elide the fact that he's the chair of the committee. It's all about Republicans policing Republicans when you're the AP.
