What can you say about a president who would lead us into war on false pretenses, and sentence thousands of Americans and Iraqis to death for a flawed and pointless mission?
What can you say about a president who would bankrupt the U.S. economy, saddling generations with gargantuan debt and growing disillusionment?
What can you say about a president who would ignore the world's best science and condemn humanity to a tardy and insufficient response to global warming?
What can you say about a president who would hijack the Supreme Court, the Congress, every federal agency, and the courts to pursue an insane vision of unitary executive power and privilege?
What can you say about a president who would decry an increase in the minimum wage, yet throw billions from the public till to his friends and co-conspirators?
What can you say about a president whose every thought, every sentence, every initiative is built on greed, lies, and psychotic lust for power?
Here is what you can say:
WORSE THAN WATERGATE
http://www.youtube.com/...
There is little that protects our democracy from a madman. The Constitution and Bill of Rights, as seemingly solid as they appear, require an adherence by our leaders to not only the letter of the law, but the spirit of this enterprise. Our experiment in enlightened self-government has never been more in jeopardy.
The branches of our government wither under the strain of Bush's "unitary executive," a theory suitable for monarchs and despots, not presidents. Our treasury has been looted, our rights curtailed, our children held hostage, our peace seekers shunted off to small corners called "free speech zones." We have made enemies in every corner of the world, and we will suffer deeply as consequence.
It must come to an end.
This is worse than Watergate. This is worse than any "gate" you can name. The gate we now stand before threatens the very existence of this country as we know it.
Let me tell you what I know about democracy:
The president serves at the pleasure of the people. At this point in OUR administration, it is time to make some changes. It is time to fire some people.
The long diaries are coming. As are the dissections of e-mails. The hashing of legalese. The unearthing of precedents. The politics of subpoenas. The pugnaciousness of the president. The depravity of the media. The litanies of sins.
It might require more, because this is worse than Watergate.
Are we prepared to stay home from work, refuse to send our soldiers, withhold our tithes and taxes? Are we prepared to turn off the TV, talk to our neighbors, march in the streets?
Are we prepared to defend our democracy against all enemies -- especially the one within?
Get prepared. Because this is worse than Watergate.
