Listening to Richardson on the Moveon town hall meeting really got me angry. Angry because even the party politics are turning into the money driven yaya that has become teh presidential election. The same money issues that prevent a third voice from ever being heard. The same voice that would have prevented a young Bill Clinton from ever seeing teh white house back in the day if the system was as it is today.
So here is my proposal. A fund be set up for whoever gets the nomination. No longer donate to individual campaigns which automatically rules out someone with a small wallet but great ideas from being heard. I am not for or against any candidate at this point.
I know there will be all sorts of issues regarding the details and to be honest I am not qualified to speak on these issues. Candidates could possibly cap their accepted donations at $200,000 before the nomination? This would prevent any dumb dick with some free time from trying to become the candidate but it would also allow for the smaller voices to be heard for a longer time. Even if the usual suspects win wouldnt it be nice to have a real convention?
Dont get me wrong. I like Edwards. I like Clinton. I like Obama. But when the richest of the rich (or the ones with the richest friends...) are the only ones in the conversation it simply rubs me the wrong way.
For all the people that want to donate early and often they can donate to a fund that just sits for whoever wins the nomination. This would show more support for Democratic ideals than for any one individual. I also think this would cut down on the back handed name calling and preschool bullshit we have seen in primaries......
So what do you all think?
