I've been mulling over what would be the most effective way to voice my outrage over Mr. Imus' latest woman-hating invectives. I could write to a bunch of the advertisers. I could write to MSNBC and/or CBS radio. All fine.
We all know that money talks. The solution, I've decided to donate some money to my undergraduate university, American University and send a small amount to Rutgers. As I watched the Woman's Basketball team and their coach yesterday, they took my breath away. It has been a rediscovery of the benefits of higher education. Look at those women. What accomplishments they have all under 22 years of age.
Therefore, the best way to combat the racist hate-filled language is to encourage more young women to stay in school and get an education.
Imus has his fundraiser tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday. Callers can donate to HIS causes.
But, what slap in the face if hundreds or thousands of us, instead, write a check to our favorite university and/or Rutgers. Here is the letter I've decided to write to my unversity (American University, Washington D.C.):
Dear Alumni Relations:
I am enclosing a check for a donation. Please accept this check as my form of protest against all of the hate filled media types who fill the airwaves with anti-women, racist comments. I think the best form of protest is to give women the opportunity to become better educated. As I look at the Rutgers Bastketball team, I was filled with hope and admiration for their calm, confident, educated responses to the diatribes that insulted their accomplishments.
Thank you for the execellent education you gave me. I would like to "pay it forward".
