Exactly one year ago today I wrote a diary about the Duke Lacrosse case. I wouldn't change a word.
One year ago I wrote a diary with some thoughts about the Duke Lacrosse case. Although some links are now dead (easily replaced with similar stories), I wouldn't change a word. Injustice is not relegated to those of race or class, though we fully know that the odds are stacked against those that don't look like the three who were accused.
The words of Reade Seligmann actually support the views of those that condemned him here:
"If police officers and a district attorney can systematically railroad us with absolutely no evidence whatsoever, I can't imagine what they would do to people do not have the resources to defend themselves."
Strong words from someone who will always have "rapist" come up when someone does a Google search of his name. I do not claim there is a victory here, because there never was one. I do not claim there is a happy ending, because there are four people, including the accuser, who are all worse off than before this all happened.
On Markos' book tour, I stood up at a book signing and asked, "How do we keep people on the left open-minded?" He blew me off, to be honest, but it did resonate with a few people in the bookstore who continued to ask questions on the same theme. It's important that we champion the very thing we say differentiates us from the Right. Are we open minded, or do we all harbor prejudices that taint our ideologies?
Rich, white people can be innocent of a crime. They are no saints, but neither is Rubin Carter, who was no murderer. The world is definitely not as clear cut as some people would like.
I hope you keep these things in mind when you go back and read what I wrote.
