This morning to get my fix all political junkies need before they face the world, I was reading Chris Cillizza's Senate Line when I came upon his #6 most vulnerable senator, Susan Collins.
Here's what he had to say:
Still, Collins remains popular and Democrats have yet to make a convincing case as to why voters should fire her.
Poppycock. We all know the reason to fire her. Follow me below to hear the clackety clack of the cogs in my head whirring to elaborate...
Why fire Susan Collins? In a Scrubs-like cutscene, I imagined myself as a campaign-ad guru, and my TV ad came together as outlined below.
...
(a woman's voice narrates)
(flash close-up pic of Sen. Collins smiling and waving; under the pic is the caption "Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine") Susan Collins has been Maine's senator for many years now and has always been well-liked. So why should we fire her?
Sometimes it's the little things that can make a big difference. Sometimes littles things start out that way but turn into great big things.
(flash "Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine")
In the case of Sen. Collins, we all know what the little problem is: It's the "R" in her name.
(flash "Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine"; the 'R' glows red)
It's that R that represents the Republican agenda that their party members are expected to follow and that Sen. Collins has adopted.
(flash "Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine"; the 'R' glows red)
It's that R that represents the Republican corruption that has crept into our senator's record.
(flash "Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine"; the 'R' glows red)
It's that R that represents the Republican president's disastrous war that Sen. Collins continues to support.
(flash zoomed out pic of Sen. Collins waving and smiling with Pres. Bush at her side doing the same; the caption: "Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine"; the 'R' glows red)
We know why Sen. Collins has to be fired. She is not advocating Maine's agenda. Hers is the Republican agenda, and that's sure not Maine's agenda. She's got to go.
....
Well, there it is. It needs polishing, but why not call a spade a spade?
