In reading my local paper's most emailed stories I ran across a gem of an interview with Dennis Miller from about at week ago wherein he explains why he converted to wingnuttery.
Q: Why has your humor taken a turn toward the conservative?
A: They bombed those two buildings, remember? I woke up the next day and had an epiphany. I want our guy to go kill terrorists. It's that simple. ...
Here is the link to the article- http://www.stltoday.com/...
Well, its been five and half years of failure, is it still really that simple in Miller's mind?
Analysis below the fold.
Apparently, yes, it is still that simple to him.
Q: In a sense, does your career mirror Winston Churchill's notion that if you're not a liberal at 20, you have no heart; if you're not a conservative at 40, you have no brain?
A: That's exactly the process I've gone through. I'm 53, and I'm a pragmatist. We watched punks blow up our buildings and, what, I'm now supposed to sit around and think about how we wronged the punks? Things get cut and dried as you get older. And what about the people who never, ever change the way they think about things? Those are the people I slide away from at cocktail parties.
Let's examine Mr. Miller's claims one at a time
1.
I'm a pragmatist
ok Mr. Pragmatist, tell me how our interests in the middle east have been enhanced by the war in Iraq? More respect from Muslims, Middle Eastern Nations, Europe? check. Fostering the American values of justice, human rights and honesty? check. Military readiness and morale kept high by backdoor draft and increased tours of duty? check. Finding Osama Bin Laden and taking him out? check. Taliban gone from Afghanistan? check. Funding a war off budget to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars? check. Yes, Dennis you and your compadres are really pragmatists. You have realy taken it to the terrorists and made the country safer. Good work. You and your ilk are not competent to babysit my dogs muchless run a country.
2.
We watched punks blow up our buildings and, what, I'm now supposed to sit around and think about how we wronged the punks?
No. You should get those who are responsible and not lie/manipulate us into a war that has both failed to get the terrorists while creating more in the process. This unnecessary war has also had the unprecedented effect of crippling our military and wasting tax dollars. Nice work.
3.
Things get cut and dried as you get older.
Yes, I used to think you were amusing, sometimes even intelligent. As I have gotten older my eyes have cleared and it is obvious you are not now and have never been either. Why can't you simply follow the advice of Pete Townsend "Hope I die before I get old."
4.
And what about the people who never, ever change the way they think about things? Those are the people I slide away from at cocktail parties.
Oh, like Bush and his latest escallation? Now there is some fancy new thinking. You must love Gonzoles- he constantly changes the way he thinks about why he/someone else had multiple US Attorneys fired because of political/performance reasons.
Miller's endorsement for president? Of course:
Rudy Giuliani — That's who I'm voting for. He's a tough guy. And I don't care if he's been married three times.
"Tough guy"- yes, tough like a deferment. I only wish I could believe that Miller's swing to the right of Atilla the Hun was because of 911. If he really had an epiphany then I could at least chock up his dangerously inane thoughts to some faith based comedy initiative. No sir, Miller went to the right to rise with what he saw as the unstoppable tide of conservatism and fear prevelent in the early 2000's. 911? No, he went right to float his floundering career. Sadly for him this tide has been quelled by reality and, hopefully, will be no more than a bad memory come the 2008 elections. The pitiful thing will be watching Dennis Miller attempt to steer to the left when he finally cathches up with the "mood of the country". You know what Dennis- Cheney said it best- go fuck yourself.
