This is not the diary I had intended to write tonight, and out of necessity this must be atypically brief.
My wife's high school was placed under lockdown today, due to what at the time was called 'a weapons incident'.
When I returned from the YKOS fundraiser in DC just an hour ago, I learned via my wife that this is what had happened
...a 16-year-old male student confronted two students in a North Mecklenburg High parking lot with a gun around noon Wednesday. The suspect then drove off.
The suspect never entered the school, Potter said. The two witnesses told the resource officer at the school who contacted police, Potter said.
Students at North Mecklenburg High, Blythe Elementary School, Lake Norman Charter School and Alexander Middle School were put on lockdown at about 12:50 p.m.
Huntersville police were searching for the truck, and found it at a Citgo gas station on Statesville Road. Officers asked the occupant to put down the gun, but the occupant shot himself. The occupant was transported to Carolinas Medical Center where he later died.
My wife's account differs in one key particular: there were lots of kids around when it happened.
Per my wife, the confrontation occurred at the end of lunchtime inside (or just outside) the school cafeteria, in the presence of many witnesses, staff and students alike.
The boy was found via talking to his mother on his mobile phone, who then relayed his whereabouts to police, who approached him at a gas station on Statesville road.
The rest of the tale ties out.
My wife is bringing the little ones downtown (I'm at work, to check on the news and write this diary) to meet for dinner, as Charlotte rush hour would delay catching-up a half-hour more than she needs.
She's pretty shaken up by this.
Again, I would very much have preferred to write about my adventures up in DC yesterday...that's not going to happen just yet.
I'll pop in later, but right now I need to go take care of my family.
This just in
Right up the road in Cabarrus County five schools were locked down " while police in Concord searched for a man wanted on charges of assault with a deadly weapon."

It's been a busy day all over, it appears.
