Dour has just diaried here about the raid on the business of the father of Congressman Renzi, who has apparently resigned from the Intelligence panel. And after the raid on Doolittle, that non-worthy stepped aside from the panel he was using to steer contracts. Two interesting raids on high profile situations of Republican congressman and corruption. And that's the key to saving Gonzales, or at least attempting to.
After all, the most potent weapon the Dems have against Gonzales is that the firings interfered with possible prosecutions of Republicans - that is a more powerful meme than the idea of firing people who refused to prosecute Dems. The first appears as obstruction of justice, while the second could be dismissed (unfairly) as something both sides due, use the law to political advantage.
So you've got a couple of corrupt congressmen, and you throw them overboard. Then you can argue that the Democratic charge has to be false because you are going after the REpublicans anyhow. Oh, there are raids, they resign from panels, it is used to tryb to save Gonzales (which therefore protects Rove and Bush and the like), and if you can make the current issue go away maybe you don't even have to indict Doolittle and Renzi, maybe they will just resign to spend more time with families (and have some wealthy Republican make sure they have an income).
Am I too cynical? You tell me.
