I was certain that I was kidding myself when I thought that Imus’s sidekick Bernard McGuirk (or McJerk) would suffer any consequences for insulting many viewers on March 28, 2007 by referring to a co-host as a "fat faggot". I wrote my letter of protest, hoping that it would join many, many others in an attempt to have this man at least apologize for his incredibly disparaging remark.
You see, unlike other minority groups who are insulted by public figures, sympathy by the MSM for the plight of the LGBT community is not as strong as it is for others. To even wish for an apology, let alone his dismissal, was wishful thinking for this perennial second-class citizen.
As far as I can tell, the two insults are equivalent, but several apologies, press conferences and so on were afforded to the women of Rutgers. Don’t get me wrong, these women deserve the respect and admiration they received with or without this fiasco. However, I am reminded of how far we have to go in order for the LGBT community to reach equality. Never mind our inability to marry in order to obtain the same benefits and respect as heterosexual married couples have, but to even get an apology for the "f" word being freely flung on the public airwaves is apparently beyond hope. Taxation with such blatant inequality is a very hard pill to swallow.
The mainstream media didn’t even seem to notice the insult. True, they did for Coulter, Washington and Hardaway, but I would have hoped that Imus’s show would not go underneath their radar. But apparently it did. Not only are our feelings not going to affect MSNBC's bottom line, but it also seems that profoundly insulting a somewhat defenseless underclass can be tolerated by our society.
I wrote a letter to MSNBC and Imus, as well as an appeal to Al Sharpton’s crusade. But it seems that the sensibilities of the female and black communities were enough to get both of these cretins off the air, which I welcome with great pleasure; considering it is now widely known that these comments are not new to this dimwitted duo.
But I am left to wonder about how odd it is that their ultimate downfall would occur within a month of the unnoticed insult to the LGBT community. Their firings have reaffirmed my belief in God. It seems our fellow citizens did not find our pain important enough for notice. Yet, maybe God pursuaded these two idiots to say these sexist and racist comments only weeks after our insult to help protect those of us who need it most. Maybe it was a sign that if earthly beings do not know when to do the right thing, then God will force their hand. If this is the case, I am saddened to know that more people were unnecessarily insulted before anything was done.
