It's official. California's 37th District will have a special primary on June 26. The Democratic side of the aisle is expected to be very crowded. Whoever takes the Dem nomination that day should easily win the August 21 general. But who will run?
This district, dominated by Long Beach but with population anchors in Carson and Compton, is one of the more diverse in the country. Some 70% of the district is non-white, with Hispanics outnumbering blacks in population numbers, but slightly behind in registration. Rumors have centered around state legislators including Sen. Jenny Oropeza, the leading Hispanic possibility, Sen. Alan Lowenthal and Assm. Betty Karnette, both white, and Assm. Laura Richardson, the leading black option.
Who do you think will run? While this district is utterly safe for the Democrats, do you worry about it turning into a racially-charged primary rather than one centered on the issues?
