Lots of chatter about evolution since the Redumblican debate. My thoughts below.
Not guns, abortion, gay rights, the "New Crusades" -- none of them, because all of them are part of the conservative "church" built on this "rock" of rejecting the most basic science, since evolution is supported by many scientific methods and theories, and is not a stand-alone proposition. Unless the GOP refutes the "flat-earthers" and "Old Testament Neurotics" I can never, ever take the party seriously. How can anyone when the GOP countenances such ignorance?
I met Gov. Huckabee once, long ago, real nice man, but he might be the ONLY PERSON I HAVE EVER MET WHO IS STILL ALIVE and who does not believe in evolution -- and he wants to be President of the United States. It's idiotic to think evolution and diety are mutually exclusive, and there's far, far, far more proof for the former than the latter. Besides, God should not be subject to proof as a matter of faith, and if God is a matter of faith, there should be no need to try to disprove science that challenges belief. To me, that's a sign of a very weak faith. True faith does not breed such insecurity, bordering at times on hatred.
When it comes to the analytical processes that support evolution, we've detected objects older than earth, earth itself has miles of layers in its geological clock physically documenting the progression of life, and the same science that gives us our modern world confirms our ancient one.
Rejecting evolution while blogging on a laptop is the penultimate in hypocrisy, just short of killing in the name of God. Accepting the nonsense of literal Biblical creation is not GOP "diversity" -- it's exploiting stupidity. And those who embrace stupidity for any purpose are not fit to lead. The GOP has let the worst possible, most short-sighted, most hostile elements in America have a seat in the boardroom.
Above and beyond the evoultion debacle, the GOP's rejection for political purposes of scientific methods and knowledge on all fronts, not just evolution, but climate, energy, birth control, you name it, will be devastaing to its prospects. In 100 years, there will still be American political parties. The Democrats will be the conservative party and there will be new brands of liberalism. The GOP will leave behind only a fringe cult of flat-earthers and Revelationists.
