May 6 - 12 is National Teacher Appreciation Week

About National Teacher Day/Teacher Appreciation Week

NEA celebrates National Teacher Day each year on Tuesday of the first full week of May. The day celebrates the outstanding work and lifelong dedication of teachers nationwide. National Teacher Day came into being through the leadership and persistence of Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1953, she persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim May 7 that year as National Teacher Day.

PTA took Roosevelt's idea and dedicated a whole week to celebrate the accomplishments of educators. PTA's annual Teacher Appreciation Week honors the dedicated men and women who lend their passion and skills to educating children.  For more information, visit the Teacher Day section on NEA's Web site  and and the PTA Web site.

May 6 - 12 is National Teacher Appreciation Week

National Teacher Day was May unfortunately you've already missed that opportunity to thank your child's teachers. But it's not too late to thank them for the wonderful job they do for your children. Some suggestions:

  1. a personal e-mail
  1. thank you card from National Teacher Thank You Card
  1. gift cards (suggestion: a restaurant - not all teachers love coffee)
  1. Leave a voicemail
  1. Stop by and thank your child's teachers personally
  1. Call their administrator and tell them what a wonderful job your child's teachers are doing
  1. Food....teachers love food (who doesn't?)

Yes, I am a teacher (Secondary Social Studies), and no, I personally don't need thanks (I get it from the kids). But I do know a lot of teachers who appreciate any gratitude and they never get enough. I don't have any kids myself but if I did and they were in school those are some of the ways that I would thank my kids' teachers.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Thanks for reading....comment on any way that you thank the teachers in your life, either this week or in general.

I wouldn't mind hugging my granddaughter's teacher. She maybe a third my age, but hell, that's one way an old goat like me can pay his respects. Now my older grandson's teacher I wouldn't hug for all the tea in China. He's about 6'6", 300 lbs. As a retired teacher, I wish all the teachers a Happy Teachers' Appreciation week, belated.

My wife (a high school teacher) told me how the teachers at the other schools got limo rides and champagne (no, really) and food catered in.

    She got jack.

in the distance.  June will come.

Yes, it is now high-stakes No Child Left Behind testing time.  So far the PTA has tried to bribe me with pastry and the school counselors with a key chain that says, "I make a difference."

How cheaply can you be bribed?
