So I bought a copy of the NY Post today, as I do every once in a while, to keep up on the NY scene and laugh at the obvious slant. As every Kos reader probably knows, there is a lot to laugh at, a lot to shudder at, and some things that just make you shake your head in awe.
The following example is hardly the first time or presumably the last time something really stupid was said in the Post, but it stood out to me as an example of true, true irony. Here's the backstory:
Page 8 of today's edition contains several stories about those Fort Dix terrorists, the Muslim/Balkan/Arab guys who are accused of plotting to blow up Fort Dix.
One of the stories is titled "Terror tandem ran smack into red, white and blue 'Big Wall'". It recounts the story that a couple of the terrorists were recently sitting in a Pennsylvania bar plotting terror against America when a big, burly, proud American veteran cussed them out and put them in their place. Now, I'm not necessarily editorializing about the story itself - I've been in plenty of bars and been in plenty of political, religious, racist, jingoistic arguments, and everyone is titled to their opinion, blah blah blah.
What strikes me as both terrifying and truly Dr Strangelovesquely funny is this part: evidently Mr Patriotism was offended that the Muslim guys were speaking a foreign language, and not necessarily opposed to whatever they were saying. Here's my favorite part:
"I[Mr Patriotism] said, 'This is America, bro - land of the free - we speak English"...
Too fucking classic! I laugh to keep from weeping.
