Wexler: "Who selected Mr. Iglesias to be put on the Termination List?
... "It's a national secret, isn't it?"
Alberto Gonzales: "Congressman, If I knew the answer to that question
I'd advise you of the answer -- I've not spoken with the individuals involved."

Gonzales: 'Compelling reasons' are too high a standard
for the Bush administration in picking personnel

...
Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL): "Somebody else other than you, other than the President, other than the Vice President, other than every Deputy Attorney General who's come to this committee, put him on the list. But with all due respect, Mr. Attorney General, you won't tell the American people on the record who put Mr. Iglesias on the list to be fired! It's a national secret, isn't it?" Wexler shouted.
"You were OK with firing him,
but you won't tell us who made the recommendation to fire him," he added.

New Questions for AG in Attorneys' Probe
By LAURIE KELLMAN
Associated Press Writer
Thursday May 10, 2007
Under persistent questioning Thursday
about who originated the list of prosecutors to be fired,
Gonzales maintained that his former chief of staff,
Kyle Sampson, put it together after gathering information
from other senior officials in the Justice Department.
[funny, Kyle Sampson has explicitly denied doing this. See Clip below.]
"I understood it to be the consensus of the senior leadership of the department,"
Gonzales said. He acknowledged, however,
that presidential adviser Karl Rove raised concerns
with Gonzales about voter fraud prosecutions
in three jurisdictions, including New Mexico.
David Iglesias, the U.S. attorney there, was later fired.
...
"The list of accusations has mushroomed,
but the evidence of wrongdoing has not,"
said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the committee's senior GOP member.
[I wonder what Rep. Lamar Smith thinks is actually on those
5,000,000 missing RNC emails? -- Recipes and Golf tips?]

The Associated Press
Excerpts from the House Judiciary Committee hearing
Thursday at which Attorney General Alberto Gonzales testified:
...
Rep. Ric Keller (R-FL): "Did anyone at the White House - including,
but not limited to the President, Karl Rove, Harriet Miers or Josh Bolten - ever come to you and say, 'We want you to fire Carol Lam - or any other U.S. attorney - because they're going after a Republican congressman?'"
Gonzales: "They didn't say it to me, and I'm not aware of any such direction."

Fired U.S. Attorney David Iglesias embraces the media in his quest for vindication
By Michael Gisick
Thursday, May 10, 2007
as David Iglesias stated earlier this week:
"I think all roads lead to Rove," Iglesias says.
"I think that's why the president is circling some pretty major wagons around him to keep him from testifying under oath, which subjects him to criminal prosecution."

Maybe "the Dog really DID eat their Homework"?
Or Maybe the Executive Branch once again is
defying the Oversight Authority of Congress,
which according to the Constitution is a co-equal branch of Govt?
Or Maybe Henry Waxman is just SO overworked
from chasing down SO Many shady activities,
that there has been no time for a Press Release?
