Variety is reporting that CBS will announce the cancellation of Jericho, the network's primetime post-apocalyptic drama. Jericho was one of the few shows I invested any time in watching, and this news is quite upsetting. For those unfamiliar with the show, I'll refer you to the Wikipedia entry.
The story of Jericho revolved around the effects of a massive nuclear terrorist attack on a small Kansas town. Most major cities in the U.S. were destroyed by small nuclear weapons, in a plot possibly engineered by officials in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Aside from the small town drama, the show delved into issues of military contractors and the influence of the military-industrial complex.
If CBS cancels the show, it will not only be dropping one of the few dramas with a continuing storyline, but it will also be dropping a show that discusses a real problem in American government.
I'm going to refer you all to CBS's feedback form, and I encourage you to urge them to rethink their decision. It's not completely unheard of for shows to be renewed based on fan feedback. There has been some uproar on Digg following the announcement, and perhaps word can spread.
In some ways, it was amazing that such a show was even given a full first season, given the potentially controversial storyline. If you haven't watched Jericho, I would recommend checking out episodes still available on CBS's site, as well as on the iTunes store. Part of me wants to save the show simply because I enjoy it, but part of me also wants more people to think critically about the issues it presented.
I don't know if Kos readers are even familiar with this show, but I figure getting the word out to politically minded folks wouldn't hurt. I don't have any fanboy delusions that an internet effort can possibly save the show, but I'd like more people to know about this.
