The decision not to impeach Bush will go down in history as a fateful error, because it is likely that Bush will leave office just as a series of calamities strikes multiple sectors of American society. This will happen, not only because of the incompetence of BushCo, but because the chaotic overloading of the opposition will provide a measure of protection to the BushCo operatives who fear prosecution. Bush is like a thief who sets the house he has robbed on fire to improve his chances of escape. The following discussion describes the approaching calamities and why BushCo will let them occur.
- Economic collapse. Spiralling deficits, a plunging dollar, collapsing real estate values, and stagflation will likely bring on a stock market plunge and a lengthy recession just before Bush leaves office. This will be blamed on any feeble tax increases the Democratic congress manages to pass.
- Defeat in Iraq. The insurgency will attain critical mass and overrun several US outposts, inflicting enough casualties to compel a hasty retreat from Iraq. Billions of dollars of equipment will be abandoned, and hundreds more US troops will die in a bungled evacuation over roads harrassed by insurgent guerrillas. Democrats will be blamed for stabbing our troops in the back by undermining their morale and emboldening the enemy.
- Energy crisis. The peak oil production point has already been reached, but prices will soar just before Bush leaves office. Spot shortages will lead to rationing measures. Oil producers will demand payment in Euros, worsening the US economic crisis. The Democrats will be blamed for not passing appropriate energy policy legislation (blocked by Senate Republicans).
- Environmental disasters. Increasing severity of storms and the declining competence of Federal emergency response capabilities will lead to one or more bungled disaster relief situations reminiscent of New Orleans. Democrats will be blamed for interfering with staffing of government agencies.
- Hostile foreign alliances. Some combination of Russia, China, India, Iran, and the EU will form a massive political and military alliance to check US power. This will worsen our trade situation and add to our military problems. Democrats will be blamed for making America "weak" by opposing Bush's military adventures.
Bush is truly the master of disaster. The steadily worsening state of America is the burning house that he and his cronies will flee, clutching their loot. Efforts to punish the malefactors will fade as dealing with the final crises created by Bush takes priority. BushCo apologists will re-sequence events to paint Bush as helpless in the face of a series of historic calamities worsened by a hostile Congress.
The perfect crime will be completed: the plundering and degradation of a prosperous and peaceful nation by the criminal gang led by G.W. Bush.
