According to the latest news reports, Paul Wolfowitz will resign his post as head of the World Bank as of June 30th. The World Bank employees, the board, and the investigative staff who conducted the review of Wolfowitz's activities deserve great credit for forcing the inertly stubborn Bush Administration to concede defeat.
The example set by the World Bank is a good lesson for the Democrats in Congress. There are many Administration officials who should be removed for incompetence, failure to do the people's business, and willful defiance of US laws and the US Congress. However, every house cleaning needs a starting point, and I believe it should be Alberto Gonzales.

Here are my reasons:
First, Gonzales has repeatedly lied before the Congressional committees, has refused to respond to subpoena requests and is clearly shielding Karl Rove and the White House while using his DOJ staff as scapegoats for his own incompetence and malfeasance.
Second, Gonzales is the key player who ushered in the era of illegal wiretaps, domestic surveillance, the outsourcing of torture to third countries, the denial of constitutional rights to the accused at Guantanamo, and the flaunting of the decisions of US courts on these matters, including the US Supreme Court.
Third, Gonzales walks and talks with a smirk that shows an utter disregard and contempt for the power of Congress, the power of the people and the rule of law. Just as the World Bank investigative report claimed that Wolfowitz saw himself as someone outside that institution and not subject to its rules, so too does Gonzales view himself as above the application of the rule of American law.
Finally, Gonzales has never represented the interests of the U.S., and has been a corrupt, mendacious crony of the Bush Administration. He is more than a crony, however. Removing Gonzales is essential to re-establishing our constitutional democracy and destroying the emerging neo-fascist republic that has been conceived by Bushco and executed by Gonzales. Gonzales is the symbol of the neo-fascist state.
If the Congress is going to reestablish respect for the rule of law and redeem our constitutional democracy, it must take the next step to invoke impeachment proceedings against Alberto Gonzales. If Gonzales falls (through removal or resignation) then many other Administration officials will take note and begin to confess their sins to Congress, and that will lead to the overwhelming house cleaning that is necessary in the executive branch.
