In today's LA Times article, Iglesias speaks out about attorney firings
Federal investigators are examining whether electoral considerations -- such as a broader Republican initiative to enforce anti-fraud rules and cull questionable voters from rolls nationwide -- played a part in the termination of Iglesias and other U.S. attorneys last year.
Why hasn't there been a call to name a Special Prosecutor? These investigators should not be under the umbrella of the Justice Department or of the Office of Special Counsel. Gonzales is clearly not impartial in this matter and neither is the Office of Special Counsel.
I understand the concern that an investigation by a Special Prosecutor would interfere with current Congressional investigations and I also have read the arguments on both sides about Scott Bloch, the head of the Office of the Special Counsel -- that he is either determined to sink Karl Rove et al as part of a personal vendetta or that this is part of a larger plan to exculpate everyone in the Bush administration. This case however, has reached a breaking point.
Democrats should demand that a Special Prosecutor be named. A Special Prosecutor would help investigate this case from another angle - an angle that would be non-partisan. We don't want a Ken Starr - we want another Pat Fitzgerald. Someone who has no political allegiances - to prove what Iglesias knows is true. He was pushed out because he refused to bring bogus charges against his political opponents.
