According to CNN, Tim Griffin, Karl Rove’s former aide and personal pick to be U.S. Attorney in Arkansas, has resigned. It was Griffin’s appointment to the position, replacing Bud Cummins, that created the firestorm over the White House’s replacement of 9 U.S. Attorneys, allegedly for political reasons.
The firings were thought to have been planned to exploit a provision of the Patriot Act which allowed U.S. Attorneys to be placed in their positions without Senate confirmation. After discovery of the firings, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales opted to name Griffin as an interim replacement.
Griffin has also been connected to the "caging" scandal, where tactics are alleged to be used to suppress voter registration, particularly African-American servicemembers.
Congressional hearings continue into the firings.
