Interesting exchange on another diary, in a discussion of sharing.I wrote this:
A subtle and powerful point...observe:
On the morning of 9/11, a friend called us immediately after the first plane crashed, and said "Turn on the TV!"
We immediately did, just in time to see the second plane crash into the Towers. I turned to my wife and said:
"I guess now we'll have to share."
A true story. True then, true now.
In a world where the poor can see our riches through advertising, we will share or die.
We will die because we've lost half our (0 / 0)
means of socialization. We can compete, or we can cooperate.
If we only compete, the needed joys of cooperation will be gone, leaving a psychological deficit as severe as a Vitamin D deficiency.
In a world of insanely fast cultural change and social atomization (we've already destroyed the village, now we are destroying the extended family, soon each of us will be nuclear or less...) there have to be analogues of vitamin deficiency in our psyches.
Social rickets. Think about it when you can't get people to even acknowledge the need of all of us to cooperate and bask in the feeling of work together.
Have a good time at YearlyKos. I can't make it. Please carpool. Great way to get to know someone.
