I have waded through countless impeachment diaries in the last weeks, months and years and I have always been struck by the remarkable disconnect between the wonderfully idealistic yet completely delusional aspect of the composition of these various entreaties. Almost all of these dissertations, even one that I read today which was a reasoned and analytical dissection of why impeachment ain't gonna happen (impeachment is now seen as a partisan ploy) omitted the real basic strategy behind the Democratic party approach to impeachment and the next 18 months of political warfare. There is a basic component that most folks here either don't grasp or ignore. That component is discussed below.
I think that a lot of folks at Kos, especially some of its younger constituents don't understand that politics within the Beltway is a business. It is the business of winning elections on an individual basis and a party basis. That has nothing to do with the public interest or what the blogoshere wants or even the public wants. In fact, frequently the needs of the American people run counter to what a political party at any given time might want or need. Iraq, Healthcare, Energy, Global Warming and Trade are all serious examples of politicians of both parties completely ignoring the public and national interest.
Yes, anyone intelligent enough to find DKos and read it understands that the US Congress is a cancerous body that serves the interests of the corporate and the powerful. What they might not grasp is that Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, et al WANT George W. Bush, Dick Cheney with as high a profile as possible. Dem leadership caved in on Iraq because they don't ever want the media, the right wing hate machine and even the great unwashed independent voter to be able to buy in on the meme that "hey, those spineless, hippie democrats stabbed us American patriots in the back again, just like Veet-Nam!" Harry Reid will give the W all the rope he wants. He will fund Iraq for the next 18 months, creating a mess that is so horrible that only fanatics and dead enders will even consider voting Republican in '08.
Yeah, it's cynical but it already worked in '06. Dems won a huge victory by just folding their hands and smiling. Hey, vote for us we're the only alternative you got. It worked brilliantly.
Do you think they will try to remove the poster boy for horror and fear for any rational voter in this country: George W. Bush? Or an arrogant nutcase like Cheney? Both of these fools are the best advertisement for a Democratic landslide in '08 that any political consultant could ever devise. Impeach these two? The mere suggestion is naive.
So, please, stop these diaries. They just make you look foolish.
