in the last election cycle, luis gutierrez raised $161,593 while spending $315,779. luis has told me in the past that it's very difficult to raise money coming from his district, and i suspect he's told others that, too.
the message didn't make it to manny flores. flores reports that he raised $478,029 in the second quarter, more than twice as much as the next leading candidate. ricky munoz loaned his campaign 148,000 and took out another $49,000 in loans, which brought his fund-raising numbers up to $ 309,506. roberto maldonado raised $182,857 in Q2.
flores ends the reporting period with the COH advantage ($436,117, $308,456 for munoz and $166,761 for maldonado). what is surprising is that flores' numbers puts him above every other democratic challenger to date.

by comparison, jim himes, running in CT-04 against christopher shays, raised $352,866. previous reports pegged him as the best fund-raiser among democrats. flores raised more than a 100k more than himes. the same report places republicans sandy treadwell and andrew saul as raising $333,000 and $322,000, respectively.
perhaps more interestingly, flores' $478,029 places him eighth in fund-raising this quarter (for reports currently posted). everyone above him is an incumbent:
Charlie Rangel $1,252,641
Nancy Pelosi $1,110,556
John Boehner (R) $758,130
Ron Klein $640,000
Mark Kirk (R) $616,000
Steny Hoyer $585,271
Gabrielle Giffords $581,637
this race has probably more significance than people realize. luis gutierrez has been a prolific traveler/campaigner for hispanic democrats running across the country. he's been one of, if not them, best fund-raisers for hispanic candidates, whether running for congress or another office. his travel and campaign support has been rather low key, but it has been significant in raising the profile of hispanic candidates.
one would hope that whoever replaces him will assume this role. while the fates of hispanic candidates has improved since luis first won, it would be a great loss to prospective hispanic candidates all over the country if this tradition is not continued. often, congress is seen as a step down for chicago politicians, but luis -- and hopefully, whoever follows him -- has done more for the democratic party and it fortunes than perhaps any other chicago politician besides rahm. love or hate rahm, the guy was a workhorse as dccc chair.
given this legacy, this is perhaps one of the more important congressional districts in the chicago area. democrats across the country have a real stake in who succeeds luis gutierrez...
