I just heard a chilling interview on the Thom Hartmann show with former Reagan Republican Paul Craig Roberts.
Roberts is sounding the alarm about what he thinks is about to happen in this country, and it ain't good. His latest column on Counterpunch.org was described in this recommended diary a few days ago, where he warns of a dramatic "false flag" event designed to rally political support back to the Republican Party.
Roberts is no alarmist. His arguments are well-reasoned and supported. I am writing this diary so that his warnings are kept front and center.
The Bush administration desperately needs dramatic events to scare the American people and the Congress back in line with the militarist-police state that Bush and Cheney have fostered.
See, Bush, Cheney and Rove know that they are up shit's creek, and unless we have another 9/11, the GOP is going to lose big in 2008.
They have absolutely no intention of losing in 2008. They plan to turn the broad anti-war sentiment in the country back to the frightened, pro-war, militaristic wave that rallied support to the president after 9/11.
Roberts argues that all of the eerie terrorist news that has been streaming in over the last few weeks is no coincidence.
These include:
- Chertoff's warnings that Al Qaeda may attack the U.S. this summer
- The release of the National Intelligience Estimate that (accurately) describes a strengthened Al Qaeda in Pakistan
- Endless attempts to blame all violence in Iraq on "Al Qaeda"
- The coining of the new phrase "Al Qaeda in Iraq" as America's principle enemy.
(Why are they doing this? So that they can blame the next attack on Democrats who call for a pullout of U.S. troops or an end to the Iraq War)
- Bush's chilling recent executive orders that give him dictatorial powers during any "emergency"
UPDATE: Note that I don't necessarily buy the 'false flag' argument. We have more than enough people out there who hate us now, thanks to Bush. Allowing Al Qaeda to flourish and allowing another attack is conspiracy enough for me.
So, what should Democratic presidential candidates and congressional Democrats do about this?
