Ok, there seems to be a very strange gap in the program for Yearly Kos.....
What's the most talked-about topic on Daily Kos? Impeachment, right? But yet, there is no workshop, roundtable or panel discussion that addresses strategies for impeachment. Why is that? I find it a little bizarre that nobody found it important enough to gather people for a strategy session on the ins and outs of how to make it happen, what the pitfalls are, etc.
There are several sessions where I'm sure impeachment will come up (Hello, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi Q & A?) but none where it is addressed head on. If people are serious about this, why aren't they organizing and strategizing around it? Did I miss something?
If I were going to Yearly Kos, which I am not for mostly financial reasons, I would have tried to organize this:
CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS AND IMPEACHMENT: STRATEGY SESSION
FANTASY PANEL:
- a constitutional law expert or two
- an experienced democratic strategist,
- some progressive grassroots leaders,
- dkos bloggers like Kagro X and Patriot Daily News Clearinghouse,
- if possible, a member or two of Congress or a Congressional staffer (i.e. a Hill expert)
- a communications expert of some kind
- John Dean?
- a panelist or two who agrees that there's a crisis but not in impeachment as a strategy, for a counter-point
Agenda: roundtable discussion to talk about the current Democratic Party strategy, the legal parameters of impeachment and other current plays on the table (inherent contempt, etc), the pros and cons of impeachment, the pitfalls: what if it doesn't work?, what the media strategy would have to be, "impeachment oppo research" i.e. how to respond to how the Republicans will respond to impeachment, strategy for getting the American people behind it, and so on.
Given the late date, it's probably impossible to organize something like this, unless somebody is already in progress and trying. However, there are probably many people that fit into the categories listed above who are already attending Yearly Kos, and maybe some people could organize a posse of people to address these questions in an organized manner in other panel discussions with the help of these types of people above.
Please tell me someone is thinking about doing something like this.
Just sayin'.
