When is enough enough? When will you finally bring a bill of impeachment against this runaway President and his even-crazier Vice President?
The reason I ask is that the Prtesident has just declared that he can use the power of executive privilege to exempt himself and everyone else in the world from the reach of Congressional subpoenas.
He has affirmatively interfered with an investigation involving the betrayal of an undercover agent, and he has rewarded the person who did the betrayal with an exemption from prison.
His attorney general has blatantly lied to Congress about the political pressure brought to bear to convic democrats and prevent the conviction of Republicans.
He has -- demonstably -- lied to the American people and to Congress to create a war with a country that did not attack us.
He neglected the people ravaged by katrina, and, when he did send help, he sent poison-filled trailers. When it became evident that the trailers were in fact poisoned, his people covered up the poisoning.
He has issued signing statements declaring that he can rewrite the laws of Congress.
He personally authorized illegal wiretapping, and, in fact, has admitted that he did so.
Now, look, I have given plenty of money to Democratic causes and Democratic institutions. I have supported Democratic candidates and done my absolute best to help the party -- even when the party was in disarray and looked hopeless.
Every night, I get a call from some Democratic organization -- the DSCC, the DCCC, the various campaigns, and so on. Every night, they ask me for more money, more support, another "generous" donation, whatever.
Unfortunately, until the Democratic Leadership -- that would include YOU, Mrs. Pelosi, and YOU, Mr. Reid -- actually decides to put impeachment back "on the table", I don't see how I can keep on giving to Democratic organizations.
Why? Because it makes no sense for me to support people who won't stop an ongoing rape of our constitutional liberties. And that is what this is -- a rape in progress, which you have the power to try to stop.
For me, the only analogy thing I can imagine is a police officer and a thug walking down the same street. The thug sees a woman, throws her to the ground, and begins tearing off the woman's clothing, with the woman screaming all the while.
Imagine now that the policeman does ... nothing. He stands there, with his hands in his pockets, whistling while the thug tries to violate the woman. When asked, the policeman says things like:
- I want to keep my powder dry.
- I don't know that I will be able to successfully stop the rape, so it is better that I stand back and try to prevent other rapes.
- The thug is a member of an important family which will cause me to lose my job if I interfere.
- I might get hurt.
- The thug is popular in this neighborhood, and I need to work here, so I don't want to do anything too upsetting.
I wouldn't think very much of a policeman that didn't do something to stop a rape in progress. I'd think he was a coward and an idiot and a fool.
Please: don't make the mistake of the cop in my example. You have power, and while you might fail, it'd be a hell of a lot better to try and fail than to not try and succeed.
A final note: You don't want to impeach? That's too big of a hammer for you? OK, then why not eliminate the pay for all politicval appointment positions at the DOJ and the State Department? Congratulations -- the administration will have less ability to control events. How about eliminating the staff of the President and the Vice President? Just refuse to fund them entirely.
And so on, and so on. In short, do SOMETHING to stop this -- not just document the atrocities, but try to stop them.
Please.
Before its too late.
