"The debate is over! There’s no longer any debate in the scientific community about this. But the political systems around the world have held this at arm’s length because it’s an inconvenient truth." – Former Vice President Al Gore
Dear Friends,
Sometimes, as Democrats in Florida, it can feel like we’re banging our heads against a wall, trying to talk sense into the Republicans in Tallahassee.
But if we keep trying... keep fighting... once in blue moon, we can get through to them.
Republican Governor Charlie Crist has been a politician for a long time. For years, he stood silently by and watched Democrats promote responsible legislation dealing with the dangers of climate change, while his fellow Republicans decried global warming a "liberal myth" and friends in the Bush Administration allowed polluters to run free under laws with phony names like "Clear Skies Act."
Yet, finally, it seems the Governor has seen the light.
On the issue of climate change, Democrats have paved the way. Now the Governor, too, recognizes the need for action and is following suit. Unfortunately, even with his support, our leaders can’t save Florida from the dangers of climate change without your help.
Sign the Five Point Pledge to Protect Florida’s Future today – and send a message to the Republican Legislature: It’s time to wake up, smell the smog, and do something about it.

This petition drive is extremely important. Republicans in Tallahassee are facing pressure from powerful people in their own party, with the likes of U.S. Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma fighting against reality, calling global warming "the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people."

While they don’t have hurricanes in Oklahoma, in Florida, we know how truly devastating storms can be. Scientists have shown that hurricanes are getting stronger, like Katrina, because of unmitigated climate change. As citizens of a state all too familiar with disaster, we have a moral obligation to demand that our leaders step up and protect Florida’s future through responsible legislation.
Please do your part to ensure that our state achieves the goals in the Pledge by signing it here:

You don’t have to stop there. On July 28th, Democrats across Florida and the nation will be gathering for the second annual Democratic Reunion. We’re going to be planting trees, cleaning up local parks and beaches, and kicking off local recycling programs to emphasize the work we can all do away from the ballot box. You’ll receive more information on events in your area when you sign the Five Point Pledge.

Our goal is to send 10,000 signed Pledges to the Republicans in the Legislature to show them Floridians care deeply about the future of our state.
Like Al Gore says: The debate is over. It’s time to act. Please sign the Pledge right now. Thank you.
