I noticed that the numbers for soldiers dying in Iraq in July were released, along with a lot of patting on the back that the numbers were less than they had been lately.
Wow.
Looking at the reports on the website Iraq Coalition Casualty Count it appears that America lost a total of 78 soldiers in July, 2007. I seem to remember the figure I read last night was 75 in a news report, but the way things happen there the deaths of three more soldiers can occur in an instant.
If July's numbers did indeed total either 75 or 78 then it was the worst July since 2003 (When did this war start again?) by some 20+ additional deaths although less of us died than in any month since all the way back in November of last year.
I'm glad casualties are down, but when the news media reports it this heavily it shows just how bad things suck there doesn't it?
Then, to top it off and to prove things are spinning along as usual, the news media was plastered (at least on the internet news) with stories that the Democrats are trying to prevent votes on the Iraq War until after elections. What I find interesting is that the sources for these statements seem to be Republicans.
And listen carefully....it has all the characteristics of a talking point to be spewed on this Sunday's pundit shows.
If these guys were so worried about the votes on Iraq, why didn't they join in to reduce the funding which is the only way Congress can actually get the troops out? Although to be honest I predict if this is done some new executive power will be created which allows Emperor George to fund the war without Congressional approval.
But there have been votes, at least in the House, to order removal of troops. While the Repugs want to whine about this topic, would they stand up to override a presidential veto?
Of course not, because they don't want a resolution to the problem they want an issue to use against the Democrats. The exact same thing they are now complaining about the Dems doing.
This kind of crap while kids are dying just makes me sick.
On a final note, America has to wake up, blogging is fine but we need to find a way to get regular people on to read the blogs (both conservative and liberal) and not just accept the pablum they are being fed.
I predict great herds of lemmings will roam across America again this election season, absent a new approach by those of us who care.
