YearlyKos has brought a lot of attention to this site. The all-powerful Gina graciously volunteered to make O'Reilly go batshit insane for the event, and that publicity, amplified by Colbert, Olbermann, et al., has been wonderful:
In fact, according to Alexa (flawed, I know -- more on that later), Daily Kos is now very close to toppling the Drudge Report:
Now, there are a few problems with Alexa. The one I'm going to focus on is the fact that the sample pool is self-selecting. You can just DOWNLOAD THE ALEXA TOOLBAR and you're in the sample pool. Once you are, every time you visit Daily Kos, Alexa chalks up a point for the site. You just have to be sure not to visit Drudge or other right-wing sites, or at least temporarily turn Alexa off before you do. (I've personally made it a habit to hit Huffington Post or Raw Story instead of Drudge. If any of you still have a Drudge habit (he's so 1999), I suggest you try it. After a while you won't miss the site at all.)
The toolbar is also actually useful and interesting, providing related links (sort of like Alexa's parent Amazon's "readers who like this book also like these books" feature), traffic stats, and a look at earlier incarnations of the site from days or years past. You can tour its features here.
But the benefit I like most is boosting the score of my favorite sites. And we can easily make Daily Kos top the Drudge Report by downloading the toolbar. It's available for Firefox on any system (I believe) and IE on Windows only (I believe).
So, that's the action item. Download the toolbar and make Kos finally beat the Drudge Report!
