INTRODUCTION
"Those who do not look upon themselves as a link connecting the past with the future do not perform their duty to the world."
– Daniel Webster (1820)
"A great civilization is not conquered from without, until it has destroyed itself from within." – Will Durant
Throughout history, powerful forces have changed the direction of civilizations and impacted the quality of life for those generations to come. Some of the forces behind these changes, such as wars, famines, plagues, and major technological, scientific, or engineering breakthroughs, were quite apparent to those who lived through them.
At other times, however, humanity failed to see the changes a force was making on society, even as those changes were occurring. The automobile, for example, made possible the suburban shopping center. But as it did so, it eroded core city shopping districts and contributed to the urban blight of empty and decrepit buildings. It enabled us to live further from work, but it took years for us to realize that our payment for that would be clogged freeways and poisonous brown sky.
Even subtler, less apparent forces had significant, though often unrecognized, impacts. Their effects were recognized only by later generations, even when those effects were often greater – either more beneficial or more devastating – than those occasioned by traumatic events. The Dark Ages, the Renaissance, and the early history of Christianity had undeniable impacts on the future of the world and everyone in it, but in the early stages, those who would be most effected by these movements were completely unaware of the dramatically altered futures with which they and their children would be presented.
Today there are also subtle forces at work that will have major impacts on the future. For example, most of us like stability in our lives, especially when it comes to such phenomena as the daily appearance of the sun. So it can be unsettling to learn about the global forces that make our planet inherently unstable and unpredictable.
Such is the case with the earth’s magnetic field. Every so often, our planet’s magnetic poles reverse position. Compass needles have always pointed north; if the magnetic poles reversed, it would cause a reversal, and they would point south. We can take comfort in knowing that these reversals happen only infrequently – on the average, once every 250,000 years. However, the last reversal was over 700,000 years ago, and the next may be on the way. The reversal of the magnetic compass is subtle and imperceptibly slow. Therefore, it is not likely to impact our generation or the next few that follow.
But this example is illustrative of how subtle forces might dramatically impact the physical world; in this case they would do so by reversing our magnetic compass. This book is about the major impacts on Western values and thought brought on by subtle changes in belief systems and ideas. Over the past five decades there has been a complete reversal of the world’s moral compass. This reversal of values and beliefs is a trend that is having a negative impact on today’s world, and will prove to be an even stronger negative force in future generations.
Being a professional futurist for over 30 years, I’m usually way ahead of society in identifying and tracking trends. Not many things surprise me. But I am shocked almost daily by my dissonance with the conclusions and perceptions I hear in the media about issues, people, events, and other subject matter. Often these opposite viewpoints are poles apart from my view of reality. At times I feel as if I have woken up on another planet, where black is white and white is black.
Indeed, there is profound confusion about such basic dichotomies as what is right and what is wrong. What is true and what is false? Who is doing good, and who is doing evil? Daily media couches the confusion in such questions as: Did Bush or Joe Wilson lie about Iraq’s attempts to buy uranium for WMD? Is Jessie Jackson an admired leader or a greedy opportunist? Are groups like the ACLU, Amenity International, and the UN positive and impartial organizations? Is the Civil Rights Movement a positive or negative force? And so on.
As someone who has been paid for over 30 years to be an objective observer of our world, it became a mission for me to understand why my usually accurate view of reality was differing so much from today’s younger generation and ‘mainstream’ media. My conclusions about why the moral compass has been swinging wildly for so long, and my ideas for a corrective calibration, are presented in this very clear book.
I’ve concluded that today, we live in a period where many of our most important beliefs are simply wrong! Yet, we have a cabal of headline-grabbing pseudo intellectuals, politicians, professors, special interest groups, professions, organizations, and clergy who continually inculcate our society with false creeds. These beliefs are today’s idols, worshipped with the same dangerous, unquestioning, irrational fervor as ancient man-made images of golden calves. They have indeed become our ‘idol threats.’
The hated Nazi propaganda minister, racist Joseph Goebbles, helped develop and promote the beliefs that the Aryan race was superior to other races, that Hitler was Germany’s savior, and that the Jews caused all of Germany’s economic problems. Millions of people lost their lives before Goebbles and Hitler were toppled and the threat to world stability ended. Goebbles said, "A lie told often enough becomes the truth."
On the other hand, my late uncle Tony, a decorated WWII veteran, would cock his head and look up with an unforgettable twinkle in his eye when confronted with lies and beliefs that did not compute with his real world view. The next words out of his mouth would always be, "You don’t believe that shit, do you?"
If Uncle Tony were living today, he would be
flabbergasted, as I am, at the lies that so much of humanity believes as truth. There are ten significant beliefs that many of us accept as true that are actually today’s big lies. These big lies have been told so often by today’s self-serving high priests and the media that the lies have become the gospel for the new millennium. This book will present the scores of small lies that, when taken together, combine to become the Ten Great Lies. Their devastating implications are spotlighted in the chapters of this book:
Lie 1 – Diversity Benefits the US: Unmasks the lie that diversity is our country’s greatest strength.
Lie 2 – The Left Is Right: The Left wing is a danger to society, not society’s social conscience.
Lie 3 – The Right Is Right: Conservatives are compassionate.
Lie 4 – The UN Is Not Unfair, and Other Arabian Fables: Discloses the UN as a biased and corrupt organization that does little to promote world peace or justice, and questions basic concepts relating to the Palestinian people.
Lie 5 – Economists and Other Pundits: Why the Experts are Missing It: Highlights the lie that economists understand the economy.
Lie 6 – Government Is for the People: Identifies the people really served by politicians.
Lie 7 – Mass, Not Mess, Immigration: Questions the lie that illegal immigrants are good for our country.
Lie 8 – Justice Is Just: Disputes the fairness of our legal system.
Lie 9 – Media Smear and Malice: Provides examples of how the media‘s own agenda reinforces global conflict.
Lie 10 – Man Is Listening to Mother Nature: Discusses the refusal of scientists, politicians, and others to tackle the global environmental problems that are already impacting our planet.
Who I Am, and Why I Have Written This Controversial Book
For more than 30 years, including ten with Stanford Research Institute (SRI), I have been paid by scores of organizations all over the world to identify opportunities and threats to their companies and governments. I have been paid to be an objective observer and to always "tell it like it is." This has given me a real world prospective on where we are today, how we got here, and where we are heading.
My previous book, Future in Sight, published in the 1990’s (Simon& Schuster Macmillan), accurately predicted more then 100 of the most important trends, their implications, and opportunities for the new millennium. I appeared on "Larry King Live" to debate the economy with then-editor Robert Bartley, of the Wall Street Journal. One publication, Critical Factors, called me "a candidate for guru of the decade."
I predict that if left standing, the ten lies presented in this book will appear in future history books as main reasons for the decline of Western civilization. Already, nearly four in ten babies born last year were to unwed mothers – an all-time high. This year is predicted to be the warmest year in history. Muslim clerics are suing airline passengers who reported what they thought was suspicious behavior, and some schools refuse to talk about the Holocaust, for fear that they will offend Muslim student sensitivities. These are a just few signs of the many problems ahead.
Although I understand that people do not get involved unless personally impacted, and that it is probably too late to reverse the negative impact of the "great lies," I feel an obligation to my beloved country and future generations to help right our societal decline. In the Epilogue of this book, I make some very specific suggestions for doing just that.
I expect and encourage the controversy that this book will engender. Some of the belief systems and high-profile people I pursue have become icons to millions of people. I am quite aware that many of the personal opinions I will express run counter to mainstream thought and the views of many respected experts. Therefore, I strongly recommend that the issues I raise present opportunities for discussion and fact finding.
It is also very important to state up front that I view most Blacks, immigrants, Muslims, students, and other groups as victims, not targets, of scorn. Indeed, my goal is to help these groups by spotlighting and attacking those forces that, in pursuing their own agendas, use these people as pawns on a geo-political chessboard.
I’m also very aware that some of the organizations and people highlighted in this book throw punches in the media and then duck behind frivolous lawsuits and other forms of intimidation to avoid getting counterpunched with the truth. Indeed, I salute heroes like David Horowitz and other truth seekers, who stand up to a conspiracy of legal attacks brought by a new cabal of Islamic, Left-wing groups and academics. These people, through a ruthless campaign of legal intimidation, are trying to silence anyone who criticizes their malevolent agendas. A dangerous trend that is helping to undermine the foundation upon which America is built is when judges forget the First Amendment of speech protection, and allow lawyers to misuse libel and slander statutes. There are a brave few who seek to serve our country by exposing the organizations and individuals that undermine our security and societal values by their words and actions. Lawyers who are no longer forced to follow the First Amendment are being allowed to intimidate and harass the very people who are trying to protect our nation.
How I Work
As I speak or consult with groups around the world about future trends, I find it helpful to explain the trends and insights that have led to my predictions. It helps to demystify how professional futurists work, and separates us from the charlatans and crystal ball set. Let me try to help you, the reader, understand something about how I think.
My strength as a global management consultant and futurist stems from my broadly diverse 35 years of real-world experience. My instinctual (right brain) ability allows me to quickly analyze numerous complex multidimensional situations, though they are shrouded in the fog of
confusing times. I then use my rational (left brain) ability to separate out significant factors as foundations for the clear objective conclusions, predictions, and action steps that I present to my clients.
I have an internal computer that has proven over the years to be a valid, reliable, sensitive, and trusted instrument. When something I hear or see feels very right or very wrong, I get a gut (right brain) reaction. Most of the time I do not understand why I had such a strong visceral reaction. Later on, however, my left brain kicks in and I’m finally able to present the logical rationale for my initial agitation.
For example, while watching CNN International one morning, visceral alarm bells went off as I listened to the CNN anchor interrupt a young Iranian correspondent, who had limited English skills. The anchor shoved her confrontational agenda into speaking gaps to get agreement on Iran’s right to have nuclear weapons like other countries in the area. She looked over her notes, and nodded her head up and down to indicate ‘yes’ as the right answer. I grabbed a pencil and paper to record the journalistic offense.
As examples of media and other bias came up, I started to record them, as well as the accounts of others who also observed examples of misinformation and bias. My right brain alarm was going off so often that I felt compelled to organize these abuses and lies in a personal journal, which became the outline for the ten chapters of this book. I apologize to readers who may be offended by my emotional use of the graphic, instinctive, and colorful language that at times surfaces in the text.
As the chapters came together, it became clear to me in an "ah ha!" moment that a larger message was emerging, greater then the insights in each of the chapters. Simply put, a random series of events and actions beginning in the 1960’s unleashed a cascade of negative, unintended consequences that few, if any, people understand or can explain. The impact of those subtle events is great enough to have reversed the moral compass of the entire world.
The generation gap is a consideration raised by my son Brett, who wrote much of Chapter 3, "The Right Is Not Right." I’ve realized that those of us who are old enough to have experienced the 1960’s personally have a prospective of those times that has been lost to later generations, who
too often rely on academic and media revisionist presentations. Sadly, his generation never experienced the ‘happy days’ of the 1950’s and 1960’s that my generation envisions as America’s homeostatic norm. America’s thermostat needs to be reset to the values of those days for all people.
But America’s values continue to suffer because media bias determines what stories are covered on the news; what is not being said, who is being asked for commentary, what topic, organization, profession, or person is politically correct, and what harmful actions are swept under the rug? Today’s generation is TV trained and brainwashed.
Added to the mix is the fact that later generations were too young to experience the Civil Rights Movement or understand its current reversal and manipulation for personal gain and glory. My son’s lost generation did, however, experience the rare event of America losing the unpopular Vietnam War. Like radioactive material, Vietnam continues to have low-level, long-range negative impacts. For example, Brett, who is 40 years old, is very aware that his generation, unlike mine, is suspicious of people who are perceived as too patriotic. They also believe that my generation is made up of ‘old farts’ that cannot be trusted.
Where did his generation acquire such beliefs? He certainly didn’t get them at home. I suggest that the suspicion of patriotic flag waving can be traced in part to Left-wing 60’s radicals who infiltrated and then used our universities and media as power bases. I am now very aware of how that trend continues to negatively impact our world. But like so many of us, I was unaware at the time of the perverting influence that the large influx of Left-wing professors and reporters hired in the 1970’s would have on the belief systems of our kids.
I’ve concluded that we live in a world where a large percentage of the population has been brainwashed as thoroughly as the Chinese "Red Guard" generation that was lost to Maoist propaganda. The brainwashing has been very effective because many of the people and institutions we have been taught to trust have slowly instilled their views over decades. For example, instead of objectively highlighting the glory of our democracy, the media treats America as a totalitarian pariah whose few faults and problems are continually exaggerated and highlighted by biased, overpaid, egotistical TV anchors. On the other hand, those people and groups that hate American values and try to destroy them are presented as victims who deserve a media platform to spew hateful propaganda
I have identified those individuals and organizations on both the Right and Left that are manipulating, controlling, and brainwashing a generation around the globe to pursue their own agenda – some for profit and some not. They are destroying Western values and dimming all hope for a bright future.
Try to clear your mind and open it to theories that will challenge your closely held belief system. Please read this book with the assumption that through years of subtle manipulation, your views of the world do not jive with reality. You have indeed been brainwashed! You can, however, reverse the process, if you read this book with an open mind. Do you have the courage to check your automatic emotional responses at the door and recalibrate your assumptions and beliefs?
I wrote this book to help move the world toward a better future, and to help right our moral compass, by providing a voice to the suppressed silent majority of fair-minded independent thinkers. Moreover, I have provided a manifesto that will hopefully fortify students with facts before they are subjected to university brainwashing. I wrote this book against the advice of many of my family members and friends, who do not share my views. I alone take full responsibility for what is written. Unfortunately, I have an inner voice that has kept me in front of this damn computer for ages, and will not let this messenger rest until the message is delivered. I have learned to trust that voice, and to do as it suggests.
Be very clear that this book is designed as a platform to express my opinion. This journal of my personal beliefs and life experiences is supplemented by supporting evidence, as collected by my best attempt to compile accurate and authoritative information in regard to the wide variety of subject matter covered. However, this book is presented with the clear understanding that most of the research material presented is based on thousands of secondary sources of unknown and varied reliability. Therefore, as the author, I must insist that all readers use particular caution before they accept or reject my personal opinions or secondary source comments and conclusions. This is particularly true of the specific people and organizations mentioned in this book. Both my publisher and I specifically disclaim any liability, loss, or risk, personal or otherwise, which is incurred as a consequence, directly or indirectly, of the use of any of the contents of this work.
I have collaborated with some colleagues and experts to develop certain chapters of this book. I want to thank Frank Jewitt for his input into Chapter 1, on diversity. Geraldo Joffe’s insights contributed heavily to the chapter on the UN and the Arabs. Dale McGlothlin, and the Federation for Immigration Reform, offered input on immigration that proved invaluable to that chapter as well. I also want to thank Don Wolfe for his help on the legal chapter, and offer thanks to my son, Brett Jordan Minkin, and Arthur T. Heist for their thoughts on the Right wing chapter. Moreover, as I scoured thousands of articles, I have added the thoughts and words of many others when they illuminate a point.
