Rep John Sullivan (R OK-01) Deliberately lied today at the Lions Club Luncheon at the First United Methodist Church, reports a local activist who was there. Here's his report.
"Mark and I infiltrated the Lions Club meeting today, where Sullivan was speaking publicly in Tulsa, after a very long period of insulation from his constituents.
We sat through his propagandistic claims for this industry or that (the ones he takes bribes from), and we listened to him make the "business as usual" partisan attacks, and then we were finally given the opportunity to ask him pointed questions on Iraq and the need for impeachment. Ours were the last two questions of the session, before it broke up. A reporter from the Tulsa Whirled was there, but did not deign to follow up with any questions to either of us, nor did he ask any questions himself of Sullivan. A fine example of the collaboration of the traditional media with the "honorable" Sullivan's lies.
He said, today, Tuesday, August 14th, in Tulsa, in front of 35 people, in a public forum, that the surveillance laws are "only for those in the U.S. who are in contact with terrorists."
His ignorance of the law beggars belief; more likely, and more plausibly, he's spreading disinformation about this administration's surveillance programs, to lessen his culpability, or to pull the wool over the eyes of his audience. Then again, he may just be in denial, because otherwise, he'd have to own up to his responsibility to impeach the bastards for taking away the constitutional protections enjoyed heretofore by all Americans.
According to Senator Kennedy, in a message sent out today:
"Under the new law, any conversation between an American citizen and a foreigner can be monitored without a warrant."
"Any conversation at all!"
"But even worse, there's no accountability for this massive new surveillance program. The Bush Administration will set the rules about who gets spied on, and will also have the responsibility for determining whether they're complying with their own rules."
"It's like taking a test, and then getting to grade it yourself."
"Each of us wants to do everything in our power to protect America from the threat of terrorism. But the Bush Administration refuses to draw any line between fighting terrorism and violating basic civil liberties."
"Together, we can draw the line. Sign the petition, letting Washington know that you don't want Alberto Gonzales spying on honest, hard-working Americans like you."

The Honorable Sullivan needs to hear some more from the OK1 Congresssional District Impeachment Committee members. Even if there are no immediate results changing Sullivan's mind, our intervention(s) may dissuade him from underwriting this administration's next power grab, or capitulating to the Cheney program of creating a "unitary executive" (a.k.a. dictatorship).
Forewarned is forearmed. Further tips for your next intervention, dealing with Sullivan: He will try to discredit you, in person, as you are trying to convince him (and others in the audience, more importantly) that impeachment should be a priority.
