... and this is what I got (four pennies method):
Hexagram: 999966. Ta Chuang, the Power of the Great
Thunder in heaven above:
The image of the Power of the Great.
Thus the superior man does not tread upon paths
That do not accord with established order.
Based on that ... also, no changing lines ... I'm thinking, no, he doesn't enter.
Technical Note: What is the four pennies method?
Some people cast the I Ching with the three pennies method:
- throw three pennies
- tails is Yin, heads is Yang (if you use copper Chinese pennies, the tail has this four dashed sign, but for American Presidential politics, I reckon that a copper coin with the head of Lincoln is more appropriate)
- two of one side is an unchanging line, three is a changing line
But of course, that gives a substantially higher chance of changing lines than casting yarrow stalks, so the four penny method:
- throw four pennies, with one more distinctive ... three more tarnished pennies and one brighter penny is what I used
- Yin if the bright penny is tails, Yang if the bright penny is heads
- if the other three pennies are all heads, it is a changing line, otherwise an unchanging line (you could also use the other three pennies all the opposite of the bright penny ... the odds work out the same)

The Judgement
The Power of the Great. Perseverance furthers.
The Image
Thunder in heaven above:
The image of the Power of the Great.
Thus the superior man does not tread upon paths
That do not accord with established order.
The Lines
Nine at the beginning means:
Power in the toes.
Continuing brings misfortune.
This is certainly true.
Nine in the second place means:
Perseverance brings good fortune.
Nine in the third place means:
The inferior man works through power.
The superior man does not act thus.
To continue is dangerous.
A goat butts against a hedge
And gets its horns entangled.
Nine in the fourth place means:
Perseverance brings good fortune.
Remorse disappears.
The hedge opens; there is no entanglement.
Power depends upon the axle of a big cart.
Six in the fifth place means:
Loses the goat with ease.
No remorse.
Six at the top means:
A goat butts against a hedge.
It cannot go backward, it cannot go forward.
Nothing serves to further.
If one notes the difficulty, this brings good fortune.
As images go, pellucid in its clarity, no? Continuing brings misfortune, perseverance brings good fortune, the inferior man works through power, the superior man does not act thus ... butting up against a hedge traps you, but noting the difficulty brings good fortune.
I'm especially seeing "loses the goat with ease, no remorse" as the Presidential ambition bug.
You Don't Actually Take This Seriously, Do You?
Well, not very much, not even when cast with Lincoln head pennies. OTOH, its no worse than making arguments based on national primary preference polls 4 to 5 months out, and that seems to be fair game for Daily Kos diaries.
Seriously, I do want Gore to keep pushing for progress in the fight against global warming, and no matter whether a candidate gets in that is not bad on the issue or seriously suspect on the issue, the movement requires leadership from the outside in order to keep the pressure on Congress and if we make the dual switch to a Democratic and legitimately elected administration.
While a big part of the focus of the Daily Kos is on improving the quality of the people we elect, we also need to keep a focus on building a progressive coalition that is able to effect positive, progressive change in the same way that the "Conservative movement" coalition was able to effect negative, regressive change.
But ... Aren't You Reading Your Position into the Hexagram
Nah ... the selectivity works at a different level. If the hexagram indicated that Gore would/should enter, I would probably has still finished writing the original comment ... but I would probably not have published a diary on the result.
