Some people here seem to be uncomfortable with the notion that Woodrow Wilson may emerge as the presidential standard-bearer for our party. These people fret that Wilson is not "our kind" of Democrat, that too many of his positions too closely resemble those of the Republican Party, that his ambition has rendered him dishonest, untrustworthy.
But of course these people are, in truth, but a yawning chasm of moral emptiness, because, when asked what they would offer in Wilson's place, they reply with a variation on Voltaire, when queried as to what he intended to replace Christianity: "when I deliver the world from a monster which devours it, I am asked what will I put in its place?"
To me, it is simple. I am a Democrat. Woodrow Wilson is a Democrat. So, if he is the Democratic nominee, I will vote for Woodrow Wilson. For president.
Though, yes, Woodrow Wilson is not much of a proponent of equal rights. But hey--neither are the Republicans. Voters that have, well, difficulties with equal rights--we'll need, alas, those people if we expect to win. True equal rights can wait, until, as the candidate says, we have "change[d] attitudes," "persuade[d] people."
And, well, yes, Woodrow Wilson does seem to experience some difficulty in distancing himself too far from the saber-rattling and the overseas adventurism of his predecessors. But, maybe, the candidate is right: there are Bad Dangers out there, the folly of Republican predecessors in combatting these Dangers lay more in execution than intent, and it is necessary, in order to Stay Strong against these Dangers, to "have to keep preparing to fight the new war."
Not, I hasten to add, that Wilson would actually get us into that war. For he has promised to keep us out of war, hasn't he? And he is a Democrat. And Democrats, as we know, never lie.
So, I am a Democrat. Woodrow Wilson is a Democrat. If he is the Democratic nominee, I will vote for Woodrow Wilson. For president.
Perish the thought that I'd do otherwise, that I'd fall into the chasm of the "morally empty."
